The Long Dusk

Written July 1, 2004

Summer is here and few people notice that when the Sun sets, dusk is now much longer. Here in upstate New York the sky does not get dark until 10:15 in the cities and later in the darken skies of the country. Normal is 45 minutes to 1 hour after sunset. So why is there discrepancy?

This phenomenon is no different than what is experienced in the north, because of the increased tilt sunrise and sun set time times are near normal, but dawn and dusk are extended due to the increased tilt. The Sun, which has always set in the west, is now setting near the northwest. For the Doubting Thomas, please buy a compass and record the findings yourself.
